Standards for how you perform services

Occupational competency standards

The Occupational Competency Standards for Registered Migration Agents outline how to perform your role as a Registered Migration Agent (RMA). This includes the way you work with clients, administer your services and develop your professional skills.

What you need to know

The Occupational Competency Standards contain the nine core skills that you need to work as a Registered Migration Agent. Each of the nine competency standards is explained in The Occupational Competency Standards for Registered Migration Agents.

You can use the competency standards as a tool to assess your own performance as a migration agent when you prepare your professional development plan.

The competency standards also give the public information about what they can expect from an RMA.

RMAs and the use of AI tools

RMAs may choose to use AI while giving immigration assistance. However, RMAs remain responsible for the immigration assistance they provide. This means that an RMA who uses AI and gives inadequate or inaccurate information to a consumer remains responsible for that information. This applies regardless of the source.

While not specifically mentioned, the standards set out in the Code of Conduct for RMAs also apply to the use of AI technology. Ethical standards for RMAs are set out in the Code of Conduct for RMAs.

RMAs remain responsible for giving professional and competent advice in line with their general ‘Duty of confidentiality’ under section 35 of the Code of Conduct for RMAs (the Code). Be aware that sharing personal details of your client using AI tools may be in breach of section 35 of the Code.
