Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority

Registration costs

You must cover the costs of becoming a registered migration agent (initial costs) and maintaining your registration (ongoing costs).

Here is a general guide to these costs.

Initial costs

Your initial costs will include study to demonstrate the knowledge requirement, an Australian Federal Police (AFP) National Police Check, registration, professional indemnity insurance and subscription to a professional library.

Costs to demonstrate knowledge

As an applicant seeking initial registration as an agent, you need to meet the knowledge requirement. You can do this in one of two ways, depending on whether you hold a current Australian legal practising certificate.
Knowledge requirement

Australian Federal Police (AFP) National Police Check

We cannot register any person who is not fit and proper to give immigration assistance or is not a person of integrity.

As part of your application you must undergo a National Police Check and provide us with a National Police certificate issued by the AFP. This is different to a state or territory-based national police certificate, so you cannot obtain one from your local police station.

Registration costs

Registration application costs vary depending on whether you want to register as a commercial agent (for-profit) or a non-commercial agent (not-for-profit).

Commercial or for-profit $1,760 AUD
Non-commercial or not-for-profit $160 AUD

Only agents who work for a not-for-profit organisation, and who do not charge clients fees for giving immigration assistance, are eligible to pay the non-commercial application charge.
Non-Commercial registration

Please consider carefully before submitting your application as the application charge is not refundable.

Professional indemnity insurance

A small number of companies provide professional indemnity insurance tailored to migration agents and their business. If you are having difficulty sourcing a provider, you may wish to contact your professional association for advice.

The cost of professional indemnity insurance varies depending on the provider and level of coverage. You should expect this insurance to cost a minimum of A$400 a year.

Professional library

Two services are currently available to enable you to meet your professional library requirements—LEGENDcom and LexisNexis. You must subscribe to one of them and pay the associated fee.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

You must complete continuing professional development (CPD) activities each year to enhance your knowledge and meet the requirements for ongoing registration.

Many providers deliver CPD activities and they use different methods for doing so. The providers determine the cost of each activity and some have flexible payment options.
