Overview of the profession

On 30 June 2013, there were 4899 persons registered as migration agents. This compares to 4687 on 30 June 2012, an increase of 4.3 per cent in 12 months.

Profile of registered migration agents

  • 80 per cent (approximately) operate in a business as the only registered migration agent
  • 26 per cent work in more than one business
  • 44.7 per cent are female and 55.3 per cent are male
  • 44.5 years is their average age
  • 1658 (33.8 per cent) hold, or have held, a legal practising certificate; of the 342 agents who are registered as not for profit, 56.1 per cent hold a legal practising certificate
  • 74 per cent have never had a complaint made against them

Registration application fees

Table 1 shows application fees for initial and repeat registrations in 2012–13. These fees have not changed from the previous program year.

Note: Registration application fees are limited to a maximum of $2440 under section 7 of the Migration Agents Registration Charge Act 1997. Application fees specified in the table above last varied on (a) 1 July 2000, (b) 1 July 2003, (c) 1 July 2000, (d) 1 July 2005.
